Every year I have the same conversation with parents: their kid does not want the same three poses against the same brick wall that every other senior in town is getting. Leo was one of those kids, and this session is the answer to that problem.

We spent an afternoon downtown instead of in a studio, treating the city itself as the set. It opened at a brick colonnade, Leo leaning into the railing with greenery softening the edges. From there, courthouse steps with a full-size flag overhead and sun flaring straight into the lens. A close headshot against bright foliage, tight enough that the background disappeared into color. And the strongest single frame of the whole set: a dark stairwell in late-afternoon light, Leo seated, chin on hand, knee up, hard shadow lines cutting across the steps behind him — the kind of frame that only exists for about twenty minutes a day, and only in that exact stairwell.

None of it was complicated. It was mostly just walking, watching the light change block to block, and stopping when something looked right. That is the whole method for senior portraits done this way — no set list of poses, just a subject who's game to move and a handful of locations that actually have some character to them.

This is the kind of session I'd like to book more of. If you have a senior who's dreading the standard portrait package, this is the alternative.
