Most people picture one thing when they hear "headshot": a stool, a gray
backdrop, a soft light on each side. That's a real option, and I shoot it well. But it's not the only one, and for James it wasn't the right one.

James needed headshots heading out of college and into the job market — no time for anything precious, just images he could put on LinkedIn the next day and look like himself doing it. Instead of a studio, we walked downtown and used the city itself: a dark brick wall for contrast, an open sidewalk for the full-body shot, natural daylight doing all the work. No backdrop stand, no strobes, just clean light and a couple of walls that happened to be exactly the right color.

We worked through a run of tight, direct crops against that brick — sharp focus, clean expression, the kind of frame that reads instantly professional — then pulled back for one full-body environmental shot so there was variety in the set, not just three versions of the same close-up.

The result reads modern in a way a seamless backdrop doesn't always manage. Same sharp, competent, hireable outcome — just with some texture behind it instead of gray paper.

I love both approaches, honestly, and I offer both: a traditional studio headshot when that's what the job calls for, and a location session downtown when a client wants something with more life in the background. Headshot sessions are open for booking, either way.
